Summer Intern – Dewberry, Pittsburgh, PA

Dewberry is currently looking for summer interns to perform a variety of tasks associated with land surveying and civil engineering in our Pittsburgh PA office. Applicant must be responsible, highly motivated, and a detail oriented individual interested in joining our Land Surveying department working in multiple office locations as a Rod/Chain Person or Instrument Operator. Applicant must be able to work in a team environment as a key member of a survey crew assisting in the performance of boundary, ALTA, topographic, right-of way acquisition, transmission line, transportation, and construction surveys utilizing the latest equipment and surveying technology.  The position has opportunity for full time employment and advancement for a motivated individual willing to grow with the changing skills and technology required of a Land Surveyor.

Required Skills & Required Experience:

  • Zero to four years of survey instrument operation experience required.
  • Must be pursuing an AS or BS in Surveying or related coursework.
  • Must have good Mathematical skills.
  • Must have good computer skills.
  • Must be proficient with the use of Topcon and Trimble survey equipment. (GPS, Robotics, Total Stations, Levels, and Data Collectors).
  • Must be proficient with Carlson SurvCE, and Trimble Survey Controller and/or Trimble Access data collection software.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driving record check.
  • Must be dependable.
  • Must be physically able to work outdoors and on construction sites under all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel for extended periods for out of town work.

Will work on land survey projects, operate instrumentation, clear brush, drive stakes, hold chains or rods, take simple notes, make minor sketches and cleans equipment as needed. Will be responsible for utilizing various surveying programs to gather, retrieve and interpret important data, and performing minor computations as required. The position will entail travel within Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia areas. You will perform survey work for commercial, institutional, solid waste, and energy clients.

Required Qualifications

  • 0-2 years related survey experience;
  • Associates or Bachelors in Survey Engineering, Geomatic Engineering, or other related field preferred;

Reporting Relationships

The Land Survey Department Manager will work in a highly collaborative environment with the firm’s professional and leadership staffs. He / she will report directly to the firm’s Chief Operating Officer.

Position Responsibilities

The Land Survey Department Manager will lead the firm’s land survey practice and be the point person in all matters related to the land survey function. The Manager will lead a staff of professionals and support personnel, including multiple field crews.  He / she will also make substantive contributions to the firm’s business planning and overall operations.

Key Initiatives (Year One)

During the first year the new Manager will:

  • Confirm or complete the requirements for professional land surveyor licensing in the firm’s headquarters state within the first year
  • Ensure that the field and office staff continues to deliver the high standards of accuracy and error free output for survey to internal and external clients
  • Learn the existing methodology of deploying field crews, schedule office work for multiple projects on a daily / weekly basis.  Improve methodology from best practices from prior experience.
  • Effectively introduce him / herself to the organization and to identified clients and other external organizations

  • Build a close working relationship with the firm’s proposal group

Education and Credentials

Surveyor – Port Authority of NY and NJ, New Jersey

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) is seeking an entry-level Surveyor. Generally (but refer to website for official deadlines/dates) the application process will begin Sept 2013 with a deadline of Dec. 02, 2013. Interviews for qualified candidates will be conducted in early 2014 and positions awarded shortly thereafter. The position would start after graduation – or around June of 2014.

This would be a great opportunity for a graduating senior to pursue a career in surveying. The Engineering Associates program is an unique experience for a surveyor to be exposed to the various aspects of engineering and construction management in the transportation sector. The first year entails a rotation period in which the surveyor works at various facilities and under different engineering and construction management disciplines.

After the rotation is complete the surveyor will work in the Central Survey Group, either at the Tech Center in Jersey City or assigned to one of our facilities. The Central Survey Group is in the Engineering Department’s Construction Management Division and is responsible for various types of surveying throughout all of the PANYNJ facilities (Aviation, Ports, Tunnels Bridges & Terminals, PATH Rail). The types of surveys the Central Survey Group performs include: construction monitoring surveys, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, photogrammetric surveys and hydrographic surveys. Current technology is used to perform these surveys, including; CAD workstations & AutoCAD Civil 3d Software, Leica C10 & HDS7000 Laser Scanners with Cyclone Software, RTK-Network GPS and Robotic Total Stations.
