Former student develops poultry vaccine

4/12/2006 —
Dr. Joyce Van Eck, a native of northeastern Pennsylvania and alumna of Penn State Wilkes-Barre, was recently notified that the plant-based vaccine that she has worked on over the past seven years has been approved by the Federal Food & Drug Administration. The vaccine will be used to immunize chickens against Newcastle disease, a highly contagious and deadly virus that strikes domestic poultry and wild birds.

Dr. Van Eck is a senior research associate at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She attended Penn State Wilkes-Barre after graduating from Coughlin High School in 1976. She continued her studies at University Park where she earned a bachelor's degree in biology and went on to earn her master's degree from the University of Delaware and her doctorate from Cornell University.

Dr. Van Eck met her future husband, Nick, while at Penn State. The couple has two sons.
