Penn State Wilkes-Barre Students Drive to Connecticut to Support Troops

6/8/2011 —

Members of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre IST Club and Honors Program recently collected donations from campus and community members to donate to Give2TheTroops, an organization dedicated to sending cards and care packages to service members deployed overseas.

Items most commonly requested by deployed troops include hard candy, powdered drink mixes, pens/pencils, envelopes, socks, tissues, popcorn, and other everyday things that are hard to get while overseas. The students of Penn State Wilkes-Barre collected approximately 400 pounds of goods for Give2TheTroops.

Students Timothy Graham and John Ulichney, accompanied by faculty member William Bachman, drove a car fully packed with donations to the nearest drop off location in Fairfield, Conn., where they met Sgt. Suzanne Lussier, Fairfield, Conn. Police Department Office of Public Affairs, and Maureen Janda, coordinator for Give2TheTroops in Fairfield.

Bachman said Sgt. Lussier and Janda were overwhelmed to think students would travel 400 miles round trip, through two states just to donate to the troops.

A fall donation drive at Penn State Wilkes-Barre is anticipated so that little reminders of home can be delivered to the troops in time for Christmas.

For more information, or details on how to donate, please contact Melissa Gunshannon, Public Information Coordinator, at 570-675-9269 or melissag@psu.edu.
