Fire Alarms/Building Evaculations
It is vitally important to understand what action needs to be taken should a fire alarm be activated in your building or any other building of which you might be an occupant. In order to assure the safety of all persons who may be using our facilities at the time of the alarm activation, everyone is required to immediately leave the building upon sounding a fire alarm.
See evacuation procedures.
All emergencies, whether fire, medical, or police related, should be immediately reported to the proper authority by dialing "911" from any phone on campus. You will be immediately put in contact with the Luzerne County 911 Center.
When reporting any type of emergency it is important to remain calm.
The 911 operator will need the following information:
- Your name
- Location or address
- Details of the emergency situation
Do not hang up the phone unless instructed to do so!
Once you have reported the emergency to 911, notify Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Office of Safety & Security at 570-675-9111 or 406-4126.
All incidents that are believed to be of a non-emergency nature should also be reported to the Office of Safety & Security.
In recent years, the threat of explosive devices has increased at an alarming rate. The majority of bomb threats are received by telephone, therefore, it is imperative that the person receiving the call obtains as much information as possible. NEVER disregard any call relative to a bomb scare!
If you receive a bomb threat via the telephone:
Make note of the time of the call.
- Ask the caller to repeat the message and record every word that is spoken.
- Ask when it will detonate, where it is located, and what type of explosive device it is.
- As soon as the caller hangs up, immediately notify the Office of Safety & Security at extension #111 or 570-675-9111 or 406-4126 (cell).
The Office of Safety & Security will then activate the bomb threat procedure as outlined in the Campus Emergency Plan.
