Collins Named PSUAC Volleyball All-Conference Honorable Mention

10/31/12 – Congratulations to Abby Collins, who was named PSUAC Volleyball All-Conference Honorable Mention!  Collins showed tremendous leadership all season long for the Lady Mountain Lions.  

Volleyball Raises Money for Good Cause

10/16/12 – The Penn State Wilkes-Barre women’s volleyball team spent a majority of their season raising money for a good cause, ALS.  The team raised over $270 to be donated to the ALS Association.  We applaud the women for their effort!  To learn more about ALS and the ALS Association, please visit www.alsa.org.

Wilkes-Barre Volleyball Captures First Win in Quad Match

10/7/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (1-8) volleyball team won their first game of the season with a four-set match over Penn State Schuylkill on Sunday afternoon. Wilkes-Barre knocked off Schuylkill 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, and 25-15. Senior Abby Collins led the way for her team with 15 service points and five aces. Sophomore Chelsea Wertz added 13 service points of her own along with four aces, while sophomore Sarah Konopki had six kills. In the nightcap, however, Wilkes-Barre fell to Penn State Brandywine 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, and 25-6). Sophomore Sarah Konopki added six digs for Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre will travel to Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday night for a conference match at 7p.m.

Volleyball Falls to Penn College Again

10/2/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (0-5 PSUAC, 0-7 overall) volleyball team fell at Penn College (5-0 PSUAC, 9-5 overall) on Tuesday night in three straight sets.  The team lost 25-6, 25-4, and 25-4.    Wilkes-Barre Volleyball Couldn’t Get First Win Against Hazleton 9/28/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (0-6) volleyball team fell to Penn State Hazleton Friday evening by scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-4. Sophomore Sarah Konopki led the way with a team-high seven digs while senior Abby Collins added five digs respectively. Wilkes-Barre will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Penn College for a conference match beginning at 7p.m.

Wilkes-Barre Volleyball Gets Swept by Penn College

9/19/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (0-5) volleyball team dropped a conference match to Penn College by scores of 25-7, 25-7, and 25-8. Senior Abby Collins led Wilkes-Barre with five digs and sophomore Malika Mathis had a team-best two blocks. Wilkes-Barre will look to get back on track next Friday when they take on Penn State Hazleton for a conference match at 7p.m.  

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Volleyball Falls to DuBois and Scranton in a Tri-Match

9/16/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre (0-4) volleyball team lost two heartbreaking matches against Penn State DuBois and Penn State Worthington Scranton, Saturday afternoon in the Athletic and Recreation Building. The Lions lost to Dubois, 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 12-15) and again to Scranton, 3-2 (26-24, 11-25, 22-25, 25-20, 5-15). Against PSU-Dubois, Senior Abby Collins led the way with 13 service points and added seven digs. Sophomore Sarah Konopki had five kills and freshman Olivia Lewis had 13 assists. Against PSU-Scranton, senior Abby Collins kept totaling up those service points with 12 along with four aces. Junior Tiffany Denny-Rochester had 11 service points and added three blocks. Penn State Wilkes-Barre will return to action on Wednesday when they host Penn College for a 7 p.m. match.

Lions Fall to Falcons in Their Home Opener

9/5/12 - The Penn State Wilkes Barre (0-1) Women’s Volleyball team didn’t start off the season the way they anticipated. They dropped a non-conference match Wednesday night to Lackawanna College (1-0) in three sets with scores of 11-25, 16-25, and 15-25. Chelsea Wertz led the way for the lions with eight service points and five assists. Sarah Konopki compiled three aces while Abby Collins and Tiffany Denny-Rochester both added five service points respectively. The Lions will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Luzerne County Community College for a non-conference match up. The Lions will begin conference play on September 16 in a tri-match at home.


Student-Athletes Honored at Awards Banquet

4/27/12 - Junior women’s volleyball player, Abby Collins, was the 2011-12 recipient of the Edward H. Kaminski Memorial Scholarship Award. Collins is a three-year member of the women’s volleyball team, where she was named to the 2011 PSUAC All-Conference and All-Academic Teams. Collins is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. The Edward H. Kaminski Memorial Scholarship Award was established by Mrs. Betsy Hughes in memory of her husband who graduated from the Wilkes-Barre Campus in 1974. This award is presented to a Penn State Wilkes-Barre student athlete based on academics (over a 3.0 GPA), campus and athletic participation, and positive qualities of leadership and character. Sophomore Meghan Murtagh received the Women’s Volleyball MVP and sophomore Kellie Yekel was the recipeint of the Coach’s Award.

Murtagh and Vowler Honored

11/15/11 – Meghan Murtagh and Michele Vowler were both honored today by the USCAA for their achievements off the volleyball court. Both were named to the USCAA Academic All-American team. This team consists of all USCAA student-athletes who have achieved over a 3.50 GPA. Congratulations to both Meghan and Michele!

Four Volleyball Players Honored by PSUAC

10/24/11 - Four Penn State Wilkes-Barre volleyball players were recognized by the PSUAC conference today. Award winners were:

PSUAC Setter of the Year: Meghan Murtagh
PSUAC All-Conference 1st Team: Meghan Murtagh and Kellie Yekel
PSUAC All-Conference 2nd Team: Abby Collins and Michele Vowler

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Advances to University Park for the Second Round of Championship Playoffs

10/18/11 - The Penn State Woman's Volleyball Team won the first round of playoffs against Penn State Beaver 3-0. The scores were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21. Wilkes-Barre's Kellie Yekel had 13 service points, 2 aces, and 11 kills. Tiffany Denny-Rochester added 13 service points, 3 aces, and 6 kills. Wilkes-Barre will now advance to the second round of playoffs, which will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday, October 21, at University Park Rec Hall. If they win on Friday, their Championship Game is scheduled for Saturday at 2:30 at Rec Hall.

Yekel Named USCAA Volleyball Player of the Week

10/18/11 - Congratulations to Penn State Wilkes-Barre sophomore Kellie Yekel who was named USCAA Volleyball Player of the Week. Yekel had 44 kills, 4 sets, 8 service aces, 47 digs, 5 blocked shots and a 57% hitting percentage. Yekel has 269 kills for the season.

Murtagh Named PSUAC Volleyball Player of the Week

10/13/11 - Congratulations to Meghan Murtagh who was named PSUAC Volleyball Player of the Week. She is the second straight Wilkes-Barre player to win the award (Kellie Yekel won last week). Murtagh had 137 assists in the 5-1 week for the #15 USCAA ranked PSU Wilkes-Barre.

Volleyball Moves Up In The USCAA Polls, While Murtagh is Named Setter of the Week

10/12/11 - Congratulations to our #15th ranked women’s volleyball team and USCAA Volleyball Setter of the Week, Meghan Murtagh! Meghan, a sophomore setter at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, led her team to a 3-1 record for the week and a 11-2 record on the year. Meghan finished the week with a remarkable 137 assists, 9 service aces and 15 digs. Murtagh has 339 assists on the season. Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Team Moves Up to Rank 15th Nationally 10/11/11 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball team is now ranked 15th nationally in the latest USCAA Coaches Poll. Wilkes-Barre’s record is now 11-2. They have 3 big games this weekend starting at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Please come and support our Women’s Volleyball Team!

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Split Quad Match

10/9/2011 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball split their quad match at Penn State Worthington Scranton. This brings Penn State Wilkes-Barre's record to 11-2. They won to Penn State Greater Allegheny 25-15, 25-18, and 25-16 and they fell to Penn State Fayette 10-25, 18-25, and 22-25. Wilkes-Barre’s Meghan Murtagh led the team with 23 service points and 52 assists and Karlee Kenney added 28 digs.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Advances Their Record to 10-1

10/8/11 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre won both of their two matches 3-0 against Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Beaver. Their scores were 25-12, 25-14, and 25-5 against Penn State New Kensington and 25-12, 25-15, and 25-20 with Penn State Beaver. Wilkes-Barre's Abigail Collins led her team with 30 service points and 7 aces. Meghan Murtagh also helped guide the team with her 64 assists. Tiffany Denny-Rochester added 12 strong kills and 9 key blocks. They have two games tomorrow against Penn State Fayette and Penn State Greater Allegheny at the Penn State Worthington Scranton campus.

Women’s Volleyball Raising Money for Cancer Research

10/5/11 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Team will be having their Dig Pink game next Saturday, October 15th at 12:00 pm when they take on #9 nationally ranked Penn State Brandywine in the ARB. Come out and support our #18 nationally ranked women’s volleyball team while benefiting a great cause! The team will also be raffling off prizes and selling t-shirts that day. T-shirts are $10.00 each with all proceeds going to the Dig Pink Foundation. To place a t-shirt order, email Meghan at mkm5291@psu.edu.

Yekel Named PSUAC Volleyball Player of the Week

10/5/11 – Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Kellie Yekel was named PSUAC Volleyball Player of the Week! Kellie, a sophomore, plays outside hitter and had 97 kills in five matches this week. Wilkes-Barre was 5-0 in that span.

Women’s Volleyball Ranked 18th Nationally

10/3/11 – The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball team is ranked #18 nationally in the latest USCAA Coaches Poll. Wilkes-Barre has won seven matches in a row, including wins of #9 Penn State Brandywine and #10 Penn State Mont Alto this past weekend.

Women’s Volleyball Continues Hot Streak

10/2/11 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball team won two more games this past Sunday at Penn State Schuylkill to advance their record to now 8-1. Their scores against Penn State Brandywine were 25-17, 29-27, 14-25, and 25-23. Their winning scores against Penn State Schuylkill were 25-14, 25-15, and 25-16. Kellie Yekel lead the team with a total of 42 kills today. Abigail Collins contributed 25 digs and 11 blocks. Michele Vowler added 41 service points and 23 kills. Their next home games are on Saturday, Oct. 8 at noon against Penn State Beaver and Penn State New Kensington.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Volleyball Defeats Mont Alto and York

10/1/2011 — Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball scored a 3-0 victory over Penn State York and Penn State Mont Alto to advance their record to now 6-1. The scores of the York sets were 25-8, 25-18, and 25-11, the scores of the Mont Alto sets were 25-23, 25-21, and 25-17. Michele Vowler totaled 21 digs and 24 kills for the day. Meghan Murtagh contributed 27 service points and 43 assists. Kellie Yekel added 38 kills. They have two games tomorrow starting at noon at the Penn State Schuykill campus. They will be playing Penn State Schyukill and Penn State Brandywine.

Volleyball Wins Again At Home vs. Worthington Scranton

9/27/11 - Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball claims a 3-0 victory over Penn State Worthington Scranton 3-0 to advance their record to now 4-1. The scores of the sets were 25-15, 25-14, and 25-17. Abigail Collins contributed 11 service points and 13 kills and Kellie Yekel had 17 kills and 15 digs. This weekend Wilkes-Barre will have four very important games. On Saturday, October 1st, they will be playing Penn State York at noon and then Penn State Mont Alto at 1:00 pm at Penn State Mont Alto. Then on Sunday, October 2nd, Wilkes-Barre will be traveling to Penn State Schuylkill to play Penn State Brandywine at noon and Penn State Schuykill at 1:30 pm.

Volleyball Defeats Hazleton in Straight Sets

9/23/11 - Wilkes-Barre defeated Penn State Hazleton in straight sets 25-10, 25-6 and 25-14 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Wilkes-Barre’s next match is at home next Tuesday night September 27th at 7:00 pm vs. Penn State Worthington Scranton.

Wilkes-Barre Women’s Volleyball Wins Against Penn State DuBois

9/20/2011 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Women’s Volleyball team won 3-0 against Penn State DuBois 25-18, 25-16 and 25-9 last night. Michelle Vowler, a former Hazleton High School player had 15 service points, two aces and 12 kills. Meghan Murtagh, a former Dallas High School player, had 32 assists. Kellie Yekel, a former GAR High School player, had 21 kills and 16 digs. Our team's current record is 2-1 and we have a home game tomorrow against Penn State Worthington Scranton at 7:00 pm.

Wilkes-Barre Split Quad Meet at Penn State Hazleton

9/17/2011 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s Women’s Volleyball team played Penn College and Penn State Worthington Scranton on Saturday, September 17th in a quad match that was held at Penn State Hazleton. It was an intense game between Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn College. They had to do all 5 matches in a best out of 5 situation. Penn College ended up winning the first two matches 25-22 and 25-22, but Penn State Wilkes-Barre fought back and won the next two matches 26-24 and 25-20. In the final match Penn College won 15-8. Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Kellie Yekel (former GAR HS player) had 19 kills and 12 digs. Meghan Murtagh (former Dallas HS player) had 21 assists. Tiffany Denny-Rochester (former Massaponax HS player) added 14 service points and 6 blocks for Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Penn State Wilkes-Barre then defeated Penn State Worthington Scranton 3-0. The scores were 25-16, 25-17, and 25-12. Abigail Collins ( former Wyoming Valley West HS player) led Penn State Wilkes-Barre with 9 service points, 5 aces, and 8 kills. Jessica Ozmina (former Hanover Area HS player) added 9 service points and 13 assists. Penn State Wilkes-Barre's next game will be at Penn State DuBois on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
