Penn State Wilkes-Barre Seeks Head Baseball Coach
5/10/12 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre is seeking to fill the position of Head Baseball Coach. This position reports directly to the Director of Athletics.  The qualified person will plan and direct team during all practices and games; recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes; emphasize academic success to student-athletes; and promote the baseball program.  Evening and weekend hours will be required for practices and games.  This is a fixed-term 2 position.  A bachelor’s degree preferred, and successful coaching (collegiate or high school) and/or playing experience is required.  Applicants must be at least 25 years old and capable of driving a 15-passenger van.

Athletic Department Announces Change In Head Baseball Coach

5/4/12 - Penn State Wilkes-Barre Director of Athletics, Brian D. Stanchak, announced today that there has been a change made in the Head Baseball Coach position at the school.

“I appreciate Coach Foley’s work with our baseball program over the past three years and passion for Penn State University, but I have decided that a change of leadership is necessary at this time to accomplish what my goals are for our baseball program and Athletic Department as a whole.”

Wilkes-Barre finished 6-19 overall and 6-12 in the PSUAC this season. A search will begin immediately to find the next Head Baseball Coach.

 

Baseball Drops Last Double-Header of the Season

4/24/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team lost their final two regular season games on the road against Penn State Mont Alto on Tuesday afternoon. Wilkes-Barre fell to Mont Alto in the first game with a final score of 1-7. During the game freshman Ed Moffet doubled for Wilkes-Barre, while fellow freshman Ryan Goodwin stole a base and scored Wilkes-Barre’s one run. Starting pitcher junior Matt Kempenski took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre fell to Mont Alto again in the second game, with a final score of 2-7. Freshman Zach Yursha had Wilkes-Barre’s only RBI of the game. Pitcher senior Pete Kelly started the game for Wilkes-Barre and took the loss. In a rebuilding year, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team finishes out their regular season with 6-19 overall record and a 6-12 record in the PSUAC.  

 

Baseball Loses Two at Penn College
4/21/2012 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team (6-17 overall; 6-10 PSUAC) lost two games in a double-header against PSUAC rival Penn College on Saturday afternoon. Wilkes-Barre fell to Penn College 4-15 in the first game of the double-header. Freshman Ryan Goodwin went 3 for 3 at the plate, driving in two runs for Wilkes-Barre.   Starting pitcher, senior Pete Kelly took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre lost to Penn College 1-16. Freshman Stephen Gaylets tripled and scored a run for Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre’s starting pitcher freshman Kyle Colarusso took the loss. Wilkes-Barre continues on the road, as they face off against Penn State Mont Alto in their final match up of the regular season on Sunday, April 22nd at 1:00 pm.

 

Baseball Falls at Marywood University

4/15/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team lost two games in a double-header against NCAA Division III Marywood University on Sunday afternoon. In the first game Wilkes-Barre lost to Marywood, 3-8. Freshman Ryan Goodwin had a double and a RBI for Wilkes-Barre, while junior Robert Bisson and freshman Ed Moffett each batted in one run for Wilkes-Barre. Starting pitcher, junior Matt Kempinski took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre fell 4-13 to Marywood. Freshman Zach Yursha had a triple and two RBI’s for Wilkes-Barre, while Goodwin and Kempinski each had a double and one RBI. Wilkes-Barre’s starting pitcher, freshman Kyle Colarusso, took the loss. With the two losses, Wilkes-Barre’s overall record falls to 6-14, but they still remain 6-8 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre will next take the field at home on Tuesday, April 17th at 4:00 pm in a single game match-up against Wilkes University.

 

 Baseball Wins Two at Home

4/14/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team won both games of a double header against PSUAC rival Penn State Worthington Scranton on Saturday afternoon at Hilldale Field. In the first game, Wilkes-Barre defeated Worthington Scranton, 10-2. Leading the way for Wilkes-Barre was freshmen Ryan Goodwin who went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, a triple and four RBI’s. Senior Pete Kelly and freshman Zach Yursha each had two RBI’s for Wilkes-Barre, while teammates junior Jason Strohl and sophomore Kyle LeValley each batted in one run. Kelly pitched a complete game with four strikeouts to take the win for Wilkes-Barre. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre took a 3-0 victory over Worthington Scranton. Strohl and LeValley each had a double and an RBI for Wilkes-Barre, while junior Robert Bisson also batted in a run.  Pitcher freshman Robert Vollmer recorded five strikeouts to take the win for Wilkes-Barre, while Goodwin was credited with the save. With the two wins, Wilkes-Barre improves to 6-12 on the season and 6-8 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre next plays at Marywood University on Sunday, April 15th in a double-header starting at 12:00 pm.

 

 Baseball Drops Pair at Brandywine

4/6/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team (4-11 overall; 4-8 PSUAC) dropped both games of a double header against PSUAC rival Penn State Brandywine on Friday. In the first game, Wilkes-Barre fell to Brandywine 1-5. Sophomore Kyle LeValley had a double for Wilkes-Barre. Freshman Zach Yursha hit a solo homerun to score Wilkes-Barre’s only RBI of the game. Pitcher junior Matt Kempinski took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre lost 3-10 to Brandywine. Yursha batted in two runs for Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher, freshman Robert Vollmer was given the loss. Wilkes-Barre next plays at Wilkes University in a single game match-up on Thursday, April 12th at 3:30 pm.

 

Baseball Drops Double-Header Against Penn State Beaver

4/2/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team dropped both games of a double header against Penn State Beaver on Monday afternoon. In the first game, Wilkes-Barre came up short losing to Beaver 4-7. For Wilkes-Barre, freshman Ryan Goodwin went 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI’s, a double and a homerun.  Pitching for Wilkes-Barre, freshman Robert Vollmer took the loss. With a young team in a rebuilding year, Wilkes-Barre lost the second game to Beaver 2-23. Freshmen Zach Yursha had a double and RBI for Wilkes-Barre, while Vollmer also batted a run in.  Starting pitcher junior Jason Strohl took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. With the two losses, Wilkes-Barre’s record dropped to 4-9 overall and 4-6 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre will next look to bounce back on the road, as they take on PSUAC rival Penn State Brandywine in a double header on Friday, April 6th at 2:00 pm.

 

Another Split Double Header for Penn State Wilkes-Barre

4/1/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team split a double header with PSUAC rival Penn State Hazelton on Sunday afternoon. In the first game Wilkes-Barre fell short, losing 4-6 to Hazleton. Senior Pete Kelly and freshmen Zach Yursha, Robert Vollmer and Kyle Colarusso each had RBI’s for Wilkes-Barre. Pitching for Wilkes-Barre, junior Matt Kempinski took the loss. With the loss, Wilkes-Barre fell to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the PSUAC. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre battled back to defeat Hazleton 7-6.  Yursha led Wilkes-Barre with two RBI’s. Colarusso and sophomore Kyle LeValley each doubled for Wilkes-Barre, while freshman Ryan Goodwin tripled. Pitching for Wilkes-Barre, Kelly took the win.  With the win, Wilkes-Barre is 4-7 overall and 4-3 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre will next take the field at home on Monday, April 2nd in a double header against Penn State Beaver starting at noon.

 

Baseball Sweeps Double-Header vs. Penn State York

3/29/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre baseball team improved to 3-3 in the PSUAC (3-6 overall) after sweeping the double-header vs. Penn State York tonight.  The win in the second game of the double-header matched Wilkes-Barre’s win total from all of last year.  Wilkes-Barre won 10-9 in the first game and came back from 2 runs down on Pete Kelly game winning double to win 9-8 in the second game.  Wilkes-Barre will next play this Saturday (March 31st) at home vs. Penn State Beaver at 2:00 pm and Sunday (April 1) vs. Penn State Hazleton at 12:00 pm.

 

Baseball Splits Double-Header With Penn State Fayette

3/26/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre men’s baseball team took one of two games in a double header against PSUAC rival Penn State Fayette on Monday afternoon. In the first game, Wilkes-Barre fought hard to take a 5-4 victory in 8 innings. Senior Peter Kelly, sophomore Kyle LeValley, and freshmen Ryan Goodwin and Robert Vollmer each had RBIs for Wilkes-Barre. Pitching the last two innings for Wilkes-Barre, Goodwin (1-0) took the win. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre fell just short of a win, losing 5-7.  For Wilkes-Barre, LeValley had 2 RBIs, while Kelly, Vollmer and freshman Zach Yursha each batted in one run. Pitcher freshman Kyle Colarusso (0-1) took the loss for Wilkes-Barre. By splitting the double-header, Wilkes-Barre is now 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre will next play at home in a conference double-header against Penn State York on Thursday, March 29th starting at 2:00 pm.

 

Baseball Drops PSUAC Opener at Greater Allegheny

3/25/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre men’s baseball team lost both games of a double-header in their first PSUAC match up of the season against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday afternoon. With a young squad on the field against Greater Allegheny, Wilkes-Barre lost 0-13 in the first game and 0-10 in the second game. Freshman pitcher Robert Vollmer (0-2) took the loss for Wilkes-Barre in the first game, while Wilkes-Barre junior pitcher Matt Kempinski (0-1) took the loss in the second game.  In a rebuilding season, Wilkes-Barre is 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSUAC. Wilkes-Barre next heads to Penn State Fayette for their second PSUAC match up on Monday, March 26th at 11:30 am.

 

Baseball Loses Double Header to Marywood University

3/18/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre men's baseball team lost both games of a double-header against NCAA Division III Marywood University on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, Wilkes-Barre lost to Marywood 1-8 to fall to 0-2 on the season. Wilkes-Barre’s pitcher, freshman Robert Vollmer (0-1), took his first loss of the season.  Freshman Ryan Goodwin scored Wilkes-Barre’s lone run with his first homerun of the season. In the second game, Wilkes-Barre lost to Marywood 4-12 to fall to an 0-3 record. Wilkes-Barre’s pitcher, senior Peter Kelly, took the loss and is now 0-2 on the season.  Junior Robert Bisson and freshman Robert Vollmer each had 2 RBIs for Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre next plays on the road in a double-header against PSUAC conference rival Penn State Fayette on Saturday, March 24th starting at 2:00 pm.

 

Baseball Falls in Season Opener to Wilkes University

3/10/12 - The Penn State Wilkes-Barre men's baseball team (0-1) fell 1-11 on the road in their season opener against Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon. Juniors Matt Kempinski and Robert Bisson each contributed two hits to Wilkes-Barre’s seven total hits against Wilkes’ pitching. Bisson scored Wilkes-Barre’s lone run on an error by Wilkes’ third baseman.  Wilkes-Barre will next play at their home field against Marywood University on Sunday, March 18th at 12:00 pm.
